Understanding VMMC

Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) is a simple and safe surgical procedure involving the removal of the foreskin. Recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical HIV prevention strategy, VMMC significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection while offering additional health benefits.

The NRHS VMMC Program: An Overview

The NRHS VMMC program is a vital initiative aimed at reducing HIV transmission and enhancing male reproductive health. As part of Kenya’s national and global efforts to curb the spread of HIV, our program provides safe, high-quality circumcision services, aligning with the country’s vision of an AIDS-free generation. By integrating VMMC with broader sexual and reproductive health services, we ensure that individuals receive comprehensive and informed care.

Why VMMC?

Scientific studies have demonstrated that VMMC lowers the risk of heterosexual HIV transmission by approximately 60%. Additionally, it decreases the likelihood of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and syphilis. Other benefits include improved hygiene and a reduced risk of penile cancer. Importantly, VMMC has no negative impact on sexual performance or pleasure, making it a beneficial choice for long-term health and well-being.

Our Services

At NRHS, we are committed to providing safe, accessible, and high-quality VMMC services. Our program includes:

  • Safe and free circumcision procedures conducted by experienced healthcare professionals.
  • Pre- and post-procedure counseling covering HIV prevention, sexual health, and post-operative care.
  • Community mobilization and education initiatives to raise awareness about VMMC and its benefits.
  • Comprehensive follow-up care to support healing and address any concerns that may arise post-procedure.

Who Can Access VMMC?

NRHS provides VMMC services to males aged 10 years and above, with a special focus on adolescents and young men, who are at a higher risk of HIV infection. The procedure is entirely voluntary, and for minors under 18, parental or guardian consent is required.

The VMMC Procedure and Recovery Process

The circumcision procedure is straightforward, taking approximately 30 minutes and performed under local anesthesia to ensure minimal discomfort. Recovery typically spans 7-10 days, during which mild pain and swelling may occur. Patients are given clear post-care instructions to promote healing and prevent complications. Abstaining from sexual activity and strenuous activities for about six weeks is advised to ensure complete recovery.

The Impact of VMMC

Since its inception, the NRHS VMMC program has reached thousands of men and boys across Kenya, contributing to a measurable decline in new HIV infections. By integrating VMMC into broader sexual health programs, we ensure that clients not only undergo the procedure but also receive vital education on HIV prevention and overall reproductive health.
